NMGC Tournament Rules 2026
GENERAL RULES APPLYING TO ALL COMPETITION
- All NMGC tournament matches must be played at Nagawaukee Golf Course.
- Members must have an established USGA handicap index to compete in tournament matches.
- In all NMGC tournament matches USGA rules apply, except as modified by local rules approved by the NMGC Competition Committee and posted on the website and/or club bulletin board.
- Tournament brackets and match "play by" dates are posted on the website prior to the start of the season.
- In all handicapped competitions contestants must use their current USGA Nagawaukee course handicap. Prior to the start of all club matches each contestant's handicap should be determined using the current handicap on the clubhouse computer. If a contestant plays off of a higher handicap than his official handicap prior to the match beginning, he will be disqualified. If a lower handicap is used, the results of the match will stand.
- In the event a match is tied after 18 holes, the winner will be determined by a sudden death playoff. If it is a handicapped match, the players must return to the 18th tee box and play 18 over and over until a winner is determined. Overtime matches should tee off with the group that is already on the tee. If it is a non-handicapped match, players can determine the best option whether it be #18, #1 or #10. If a playoff cannot be completed on the same day of the original match, the playoff may be postponed until a later date. In a handicap match playoff, the handicap strokes will be allocated on the same holes as in the original match.
- Both sides may agree to suspend a match that has begun due to poor weather even if the course remains open. If one player wants to continue, the match must go on until Course is officially closed. When play resumes on the day of play, players return to their marked location and continue. If play resumes at a later date, players start at the tee box of the last hole not completed. When match is resumed, the original handicaps are to be used.
- Contestants may play multiple matches at the same time (i.e. play a match versus two or three different opponents during the same round of golf). Note: If you decide to play 2 matches within a single tee time, both matches must be played from the same tee box. No multiple tee box matches are allowed for a member within a single tee time.
- Upon the completion of a match, it is the responsibility of the winner(s) to record the date of the match and the winner's name(s) in the specific tournament bracket on the NMGC website.
- Upon the completion of a match, all contestants must post their scores to the handicap system.
- See our Handicap Policy for complete score posting requirements.
SCHEDULING OF MATCHES
- Contestants are responsible for scheduling all of their own matches at a mutually agreed upon date/time. Be proactive! Contact your opponent as soon as possible to schedule your match.
- When scheduling Two-Man tournament matches participants should verify their partner's availability before agreeing to a match. Your scheduling commitments will be binding on your team.
- If contestants need to reschedule a match after a date/time has been agreed to it is the responsibility of the individual or team requesting the change to contact their opponent at least one week prior to scheduled date/time. Failure to do so may result in forfeit.
- If contestants need to reschedule a match but cannot find a mutually agreeable date/time before the "play by" date, the individual or team with the initial conflict must request an extension from the Tournament Chairman. Failure to request an extension will result in forfeit.
- If you are having difficulty contacting or getting a response from a match opponent, it is up to you to contact the Tournament Chairman at least one week in advance of the match "play by" date.
MATCH EXTENSIONS
- No extensions will be granted for any first & second round matches, except for an automatic extension resulting from the closure of Nagawaukee Golf Course.
- Extensions are discouraged and will be granted only in extraordinary circumstances.
- In the event that Nagawaukee Golf Course is CLOSED on the date and time of a scheduled match, an automatic one week extension of the posted "play by" will be granted. It will be the responsibility of the match participants to mutually agree on a new date/time to play their match - not later than the extended "play by" for that round.
- If contestants have not played their match on or before the "play by" date and have not requested an extension of time to complete their match, all contestants may be forfeited. NOTE: This includes postponed match playoffs and matches that have been suspended due to poor weather conditions.
- Contestants are expected to make a good faith effort to play their matches by the "play by" date. In the event that a third (or later) round match cannot be played by the "play by" date, a request for an extension must be made to the Tournament Chairman PRIOR TO the "play by" date. If no extension request is made prior to the "play by" date, the match may be declared a double forfeit.
- The Tournament Chairman will evaluate extension requests on a case-by-case basis and will consider pertinent factors in arriving at a decision. The decision of the Tournament Chairman is final.
TOURNAMENT FORMATS AND ELIGIBILITY
All Naga-Waukee Men's Golf Club members can participate in up to a total of 3 season long match play tournaments. They are:
- Club Championship
- All-Member Championship
- Two-Man Championship
- Senior Club Championship **
**Members 65 years and older by May 1 of the current season can elect to play in this tournament.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
- This is a single elimination individual match play competition open to all club members.
- 2025 Naga-Waukee handicap index will be used to seed the flights. Champ flight will include the top 8 players and will be played from the Blue tees. Additional flights will have approximately 16 players each. 1st and 2nd flights will play white tees. All other flights will play Gold tees. Competition within flights will be scratch except the very last flight which will compete on the basis of their net scores, using their current course handicap.
ALL-MEMBER CHAMPIONSHIP
- This is a single elimination individual match play competition open to all club members.
- Pairings for this tournament are made randomly.
- Tournament participants can choose to play from any tee box, using their current Naga-Waukee course handicap.
- Notes:
- The selected tee box must be used for the entire round. However, a different tee can be selected and played in subsequent rounds of this tournament.
- The player with the higher handicap receives the full difference in the course handicap between the two players. The lower handicap player plays from scratch.
- In order to accommodate all entries, there will be two brackets, A and B. The A bracket winner will play the B bracket winner for the Championship. The losers from the A and B bracket finals will play for third place.
TWO MAN CHAMPIONSHIP
- This is a single elimination team match play competition open to all club members.
- Pairings for this tournament are made randomly.
- Tournament participants can choose to play from any tee box, using their current Naga-Waukee course handicap.
- Notes:
- The selected tee box must be used for the entire round. However, a different tee can be selected and played in subsequent rounds. Partners are allowed to play different tees.
- Team handicaps are determined by adding the current, individual course handicaps of the two team members. The team with the higher total team handicap will receive the net difference in strokes for the match. Handicap strokes are granted on the individual hole(s) according to the course handicap ranking printed on the scorecard for each hole. (EXAMPLE: If Team A's total course handicap is 18 and Team B's total is 22, Team B will receive one stroke on each of the four lowest ranked handicap holes on the course.)
- The lowest net team score wins the hole. (EXAMPLE: Team A members each score a 4 on a hole, for a team total of 8. Team B members score a 4 and a 6 for a gross total of 10, less one handicap stroke gives Team B a net team total of 9. Team A wins the hole.)
- In order to accommodate all entries, there will be two brackets, A and B. The A bracket winners will play the B bracket winners for the Championship. The losers from the A and B bracket finals will play for third place.
SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
- Players participating in this tournament must be 65 years of age or older as of May 1st, 2026. 2025 Naga-Waukee handicap Index will be used to seed the flights. All flights in the Senior Championship will be played from the gold tees and competition will be scratch. The number of flights and the number of players in each flight will be determined by the Tournament Chairman based on the number of players that register.
SPECIAL INJURY RULES PERTAINING TO TWO-MAN TOURNAMENT
- If one member of a team entered in the NMGC Two-Man Tournament is forced to withdraw after having played one or more tournament matches due to serious illness, injury or termination of club membership, the remaining member of that team may request the substitution of a replacement player for the withdrawn player under the following circumstances:
- The team has not advanced beyond the third round of the Two-Man Tournament.
- The continuing player is able to find an eligible replacement player in sufficient time to play the next scheduled match with one week of the scheduled "Play By" date.
- The proposed replacement player has not already competed in the Two-Man Tournament that same season with a different partner.
- For the remainder of that season, the withdrawn player would not be allowed to participate in any other NMGC Tournament matches.
- A substitution request must be submitted by the continuing partner to the Tournament Chairman immediately upon notification of his partner's withdrawal. If in the judgement of the Tournament Chairman the process of finding a replacement unduly delays the progression of the tournament matches, the Tournament Chairman may deny the substitution request and forfeit the team.
